Getting to Owen Springs for the Stuart Re-enactment and Concert on Sunday afternoon 11 April.

The feature event for the 150th anniversary of John McDouall Stuart’s 1860 expedition will be a re-enactment of his arrival at Owen Springs. A creekbed concert will follow, featuring local legends Bloodwood and Ted Egan. Bring a folding chair or rug.

John McDouall Stuart (played by local icon Bill Hayes) will arrive at Owen Springs on his faithful horse Polly at 4 pm on Sunday 11 April. He’ll be accompanied by William Kekwick (Jim Thomas) and Benjamin Head (Harry Osborn).

To see them arrive, drive west on the Hermannsburg Road to the Hugh River. It’s exactly 50 km from the centre of town. The turn-off is just past the river. There’ll be volunteers there with buckets, asking for a donation of $2 per person to cover the costs of staging the event. The side road into Owen Springs is unsealed but accessible by conventional vehicles. It’s 4 km on this gravel road from the bitumen to the creekbed where the event will be held. You don’t need a four wheel drive.

We suggest you leave town at 2.30 pm. This will allow 45 minutes to get to the turn-off and another 30 minutes to drive into the Reserve, park your car and walk to the creekbed.

For people needing transport, there will be a bus departing from the Alice Springs Town Council carpark at 2.30 pm. The cost is very low ($5 per person) thanks to generous sponsorship from the Dyson Group of Companies who run Cobb & Co and the local school bus runs. However, seats are limited and bookings are essential. Contact Tourism Central Australia in Gregory Terrace.

The concert will run from 4.30 pm until 6.30 pm. The Rotary Club of Stuart will be selling soft drinks and running a barbecue stall.

For more details about the Owen Springs Reserve, contact Parks and Wildlife who are hosting the event. Their town phone number is
8951 8250. Alternately, you can ring the Owen Springs Ranger Station during office hours on 8956 7300.
