In week 17 of the 1860 expedition (22-28 June 1860) Stuart, Kekwick and Head got as far as Attack Creek but were then forced to abandon the expedition.

Stuart was officially renamed Alice Springs on 30 August 1933.

How about a N.T. wide competition to design a 55 cent postage stamp commemorating the events of 1860 and 1862 (1860 - attaining the Centre; 1862 - the successful crossing of the continent & safe return by Europeans).This could be released in 2012, and as a 55 cent unit, would be widely used throughought Australia.

I think a competition to see who can grow the most 'JMS like beard' would be great as a fundraiser for RFDS or something similar. Participants could post photos online (perhaps this site) as a progress update and local businesses could donate prizes.... Kind of like Movember but a full blown explorer beard! There could be a judging by the public in town in Alice Plaza which could also act as publicity for other JMS events.
