2 March - John McDouall Stuart, William Kekwick and Benjamin Head leave Chambers Creek in SA with 13 horses.
2 April - Crossed the 26th parallel of latitude: the SA/NT border.
4 April - Reached a major watercourse which Stuart named the Finke River.
6 April - Arrived at Chambers Pillar.
7 April - Crossed sandhill country and camped at the Hugh River which they subsequently followed northwards.
11 April - Camped at a large waterhole on the Hugh that was later named Owen Springs.
13 April - Stuart climbed to the top of the MacDonnell Range at Brinkley Bluff which is 50 km west of Alice Springs.
15 April - Crossed the range through a gap now called Stuart’s Pass and camped that night at Hamilton Springs.
23 April - Stuart and Kekwick climbed to the top of the mountain now called Central Mount Stuart, leaving a message in a bottle.
1 June - Camped at Bonney Creek, north of the Devil’s Marbles.
6 June - Reached Tennant Creek.
26 June - Confronted by Warramunga warriors at a place now called Attack Creek. Running low on supplies and with scurvy taking its toll on all three men, Stuart decides that night to abandon the expedition and return to Adelaide.
13 July - Camped at a watercourse that he names Barrow Creek.
28 July - Back at Owen Springs.
6 August - Back at the Finke River.
20 August - The ill-fated Burke and Wills expedition leaves Melbourne bound for the Gulf of Carpentaria.
7 October - Stuart, Kekwick and Head arrive in Port Adelaide after travelling from Port Augusta by boat. |
